Is it really such a bad thing a game in the franchise adds its own twist on the formula? As I indicated, the parts that go into torture horror direction are short and only make up a comparably small part of the game. You haven't explicitly said it, but it is still something that is often generalized as if that was what Homecoming was all about and your comment didn't differentiate much on that notion.
Purposefully didn’t mention SM or BOM because they are such huge departures. For aesthetic reasons only and some slapping music I’d probably choose Homecoming. Between other western silent hill games I’m not sure what I’d choose between origins, homecoming or downpour. Overall though the game is a mess and makes no sense when you start to think about it. After the first hour or so it gets pretty mediocre imo. I even found myself getting a little scared here and there. I even like how the transformation to the Otherworld look. Atmosphere is good and some of the monster, mostly the bosses are pretty good.
